10 DAYS RWENZORI TREKKING BUKURUNGU TRAIL AND CENTRAL CIRCUIT ROUTE.
Overview
This 10 days Rwenzori trekking best of Bukurungu trail and Central circuit route trip gives you the ultimate hiking experience starting your trek through the less explored, challenging but rewarding Bukurugu Trail.
DAY 1: ARRIVAL AT AIRPORT AND TRANSFER
Met our tourist guide driver at Airport upon and either transfer to the hotel or to countryside of Kasese town for Rwenzori Mountains trekking depending on arrival time.
DAY 2: KASESE TOWN-RWIGHO CAMP
Early morning after breakfast, check out and transfer to Omukorukumi before hiking through the community of Kasanzi before entering Rwenzori Mountains National Park through the Bukurungu Wilderness camping trail.
Continue with a hike as we head to Kasanzi camp in the tropics for resting and later have an overnight at Rwigho Camp after 7-8 hours.
DAY 3: RWIGHO CAMP-KAMBEHO CAMP
Early morning after breakfast, check out and transfer to Kambeho Camp that means a place of Coldness in Lhukonzo as well as locally called Lhume camp named after Lake Lhume.
Kambeho Camp lies in the zone of the park that’s characterized with scenic views of valleys lushed with varities of primates and birds like Black and White Colubus monkeys, Vervet monkeys, Turraccos etc.
Later in the afternoon, arrive at Kambeho Camp for a hot drink and dinner and finally have an overnight.
DAY 4: KAMBEHO CAMP-LAMIA CAMP.
Early morning after breakfast, check out and transfer to Lamia Camp through Mughuli trail and Lake Mughuli with a strong MTN network service to allow you have mobile phones and later proceed to Lamia Camp.
While on the hike to Lamia Camp, there are several unnamed peaks that can easily be climbed by those interested they adapt to climb Portal Peaks and Mount Gessi.
Later in the mid-afternoon, we come to the destination at Lamia Camp where you explore the real taste of Rwenzori mountains waterfalls. Have dinner and overnight at the camp.
DAY 5: LAMIA CAMP-BIGO CAMP 3450m asl.
Early morning after breakfast, check out and transfer to Bigo Camp as it marks the last day on Bukurungu trail Rwenzori Mountains climbing route joining the Central Circuit trail at the beginning of the lower Bigo bog before crossing River Bujuku.
Then later descend down from Lamia Camp down past Bukurungu lakes before reaching River Bujuku then climb gently to Bigo Camp for tent assembling for an overnight or sleep at John Maate hut for a warmer night.
NB: This could be your last night of the 10 days to sleep in a tent or may be your first night to sleep in a hut while on the Bukurungu Trail or Central circuit route trek.
Extra peaks of Mount Gessi, Emin Peak, Portal peaks, Mount Baker, Mount Speke, Weismann’s peak, Albert Peak, Moebius peak and Alexandra peak can be done for extra days in addition to the standard 8 days trek to summit Margherita Peak at $150 per person per day.
DAY 6: BIGO CAMP – ELENA CAMP
Early morning after breakfast depending to where you had your night whether John Maate or Bigo Camp later transfer to Elena Camp for a long hiking distance while preparing for a 5,109m asl to Margherita peak. While on the hike, continue to the Omukendeghe shelter for a rest before continuing through the Bujuku valley bog.
Finally climb westwards towards the Elena hut crossing the route from Kitandara Camp from Bujuku camp as you enter the Alfro alpine zone climbing through the rocky sections before reaching the cold Elena camp at 4.505m asl for an overnight.
DAY 7: ELENA CAMP TO MARGHERITAH PEAK BACK TO LOWER LAKE KITANDARA CAMP.
Early morning at 2am, wake up for a hot meal to prepare you the Margherita peak. Leave Elena hut climbing up through the rocky sections before crossing the first Margherita glacier.
Later slope down to the snowline and then climb up the Stanely plateau through the glacier but continue to climb the steep section to reach Margherita peak. After summiting, take memorable photos to capture your moments before descending back through the same trail to Elena for a hot Lunch.
After some rest, descend the Kitandara lakes camp for an overnight overlooking Mount Baker.
DAY 8: LOWER LAKE KITANDARA CAMP TO GUY YEOMAN CAMP.
Have a hot breakfast with views of DR Congo before climbing from Kitandara to Guy Yeoman Camp for an overnight.
DAY 9: GUY YEOMAN CAMP-MIHUNGA GATE- KASESE TOWN.
This is your last day of the Rwenzori Mountains climbing with Margherita peak. Below Guy Yeoman, the route descends the cliffs of Kichuchu.
Beyond Kichuchu the muddy path crosses the Mubuku River through the Bamboo Forest before climbing downwards to Nyabitaba to complete the circuit for 7-8 hours.
DAY 10: TRANSFER FROM KASESE TO ENTEBBE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT FOR DEPARTURE.
Have an early morning breakfast and check out for a Entebbe departure to have a return flight to your next safari destination.
